The Ultimate Guide on Fishing in the St. Pete Clearwater Area

Is there a better way to relax than with a fishing rod in your hand and sparkling water gleaming in front of you? We think not!

St. Pete, Florida fishing is all about fun and relaxation. With our comprehensive fishing guide that also explores the best St. Pete Beach fishing charters, you can plan a day of enjoying the best of both worlds- fun, and relaxation!

Where to Fish

Sunshine Skyway Fishing Pier

The first spot we highly recommend is the Sunshine Skyway Fishing Pier. The fishing pier is massive- an open sprawling pier complex open all the time, all year round. It is located at 4905 34th Street South #5000 with its own dedicated parking area. Entrance is $4 per vehicle, but the pass provides you and everyone in the vehicle access for the whole day. It is a very popular spot for night fishing, as the bridge pier lights up each evening, attracting fish to the pier’s waters.

Pier 60

Secondly, we recommend Pier 60 in Clearwater. It is a fantastic place to drop in a line. It is also family-friendly, with numerous accommodations, like a beach playground, a snack shop, a bait and merchandise store, and six covered pavilions. Pier 60 is a great spot to fish when staying at the nearby St. Pete Clearwater rentals.

Fishers snag Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, snook, spotted trout, redfish, and flounder, among others. It is located at 7 Causeway Blvd and locals recognize it as the spot for Sunsets at Pier 60, a seasonal series with food vendors and entertainment at the pier from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. nightly.

Bay Pier at Fort De Soto Park

Finally, we have to highlight Bay Pier at Fort De Soto Park. While a modest drive from many Clearwater Beach rentals, this off-the-radar pier within Fort De Soto Park is a lovely little spot, boasting beautiful viewpoints sure to be loved by any nature lover. It is also a popular ferry departure point, taking guests daily to the iconic Egmont Key. It is at 3500 Pinellas Bayway S. Tierra Verde.

Finally, we want to make special note of Double Eagle Deep Sea Fishing. With a specific focus on deep-sea and offshore fishing, owner Sandy Haggert and his wife RoseAnn Haggert, carry you on 4 or 8-hour excursions for Hogfish, Mangrove Snapper, Gag Grouper, and King Mackerel.

License rules are actually quite straightforward in Florida. A license is required to fish in the state. However, there are stipulations to make getting a license extremely easy and omissions to the requirement. Youth under 16 years of age are not required to have a license, nor are resident seniors age 65 or older with proof of age or residency.

Outside that, many fishing piers will provide a de-facto license for the duration of your fishing time. This is in exchange for a fee to fish on the pier. Fishing charters, also, will cover any license costs as long as you fish under their supervision and guidance.
