Originally known as Indian Rocks South Shore, this quiet beach town is one of the oldest and smallest beach communities with the longest name. It was named Indian Rocks Beach, South Shore because the tiny community wanted a separate identity from the City of Indian Rocks Beach. The Town averages only a block in width between the Gulf of Mexico and by an area known as The Narrows.

It was originally an Indian campsite and got its name from the large red rocks found along its shoreline. Its first "settlers" were a pair of Robinson Crusoe-Type brothers named Cochran. In 1883 four Cedar Key speculators sailing to St. Petersburg, stopped to explore the Island. They were fascinated by the Island's possibilities for future development and bought it from the Cochran Brothers for a nominal sum. It is said the brothers bartered their Island "for little more than a string of beads and $25.00, figuratively speaking, like the Indians of Manhattan". The region soon became a popular residential and vacation area for many prominent Tampans such as the McKay family. (Tampa Tribune)

Until a wooden turn bridge was built in 1916, a ferryboat transported pedestrians to the Island, and a barge carried horses, buggies and a few automobiles to the summer resort. In 1905 the Railroad ran a spur line from the mainland to the beach and a hotel was built, adding to the Island's popularity. The railroad spur was abandoned later, but the community continued to grow especially during the Post-World War II building boom. Eventually in 1973 the name was officially changed to the more manageable Indian Shores. Presently the town's residential quality and its assortment of shops and restaurants help visitors feel right at home and is popular from snowbirds to seabirds. Favorite local spots are the eccentric Indian Shores Coffee Company and the popular Salt Rock Grill.

January 2018 - Small, quaint bungalows. Beautiful beach! Quiet, peaceful location well suited for adults. Jane K

July 2017 - We had a great experience here. Our condo was very clean and all accommodations were at right at hand. Breath-taking beach views with a neatly kept backyard perfect for grilling out or just enjoying the sunset. Definitely plan on coming back!

June 2017 - Beach was right out the back door, had a great time! Quiet neighbors, friendly owners! Walk across street to Aloha To Go, nice cheap place to eat.

May 2017 - My wife and I booked a last minute trip and could not be happier with our experience. The place was exactly as described, was very clean and well kept, and the beach access can't be beat. It is one of eight units, with shared space outside, but the layout felt fairly private nonetheless. The rules/guidelines seemed a bit strict when we first received them, but it became very clear upon our arrival that they go to great lengths to guarantee the quality and cleanliness of the property. We certainly hope to come back, and would recommend it to anyone.

May 2017 - As advertised! The bikes were a big help. Hosts were readily available, but place was self-explanatory. Would stay again!

April 2017 - We had the pleasure of staying at the Beach Bungalow Place recently on a couples trip. Best. Vacation. Ever! The unit is just perfect. It is perfectly sized for two. It had been recently redone. Everything was very clean and quaintly decorated. Overall it was very quiet. You would never know others were staying there, even being on a bottom unit. The bed was very comfortable. The kitchen was small but well stocked. Looking out the back window and sliding glass doors gave you a beautiful view of the ocean. When you stepped out the back doors, a large patio welcomes you with two gas grills, and four large tables for outdoor dining. The was a fire pit with adirondack chairs just off the patio for evening enjoyment. The ocean was just a few steps off the patio. The beach was quiet and was clean. There were several other amenities including beach chairs, umbrellas, kayaks, and bicycles for use. The unit itself is centrally located with many restaurants and activities within walking distance. We would recommend eating at Lou Lou's, Oyster Bar, the Salt Rock, and Crabby Bill's. Management was very helpful and quick to respond. Overall we had a wonderful experience and definitely plan to return!!
